Four marines were shot and killed by a gunman, Thursday at two military facilities in Chattanooga, Tennessee possibly by main suspect Mohamma
d Youssuf Abdulazeez 24, a U.S citizen from Kuwait.
There is no Information regarding the motive of the attack. The federal prosecutor for Eastern Tennessee, Bill Killian said the attack is being investigated as an act of domestic terrorism.
However the key question is why is this being investigated as a terrorist attack? Why as Americans is that the first thing we jump to? Is it because of his cultural name, Mohammod, or because the attack was towards military men?
Maybe it’s not any of those two.
Maybe the sole reason everyone jumped to the conclusion of terrorism is because of fear–fear of terrorism but more specifically a fear of ISIS. There has been many threat towards America from the radical terrorist group. And also many recruitments of American citizens to join.
If there was no ISIS or violent threats of terrorism towards America, would we still assume the attack was a case of domestic terrorism? Or would we chalk it up only to a violent criminal act?
There is no way to know but it is a questions we must all think about: Are Americans thinking irrational because of fear?
