Teacher of the Month: Erin Whalen

Georgina Jaimes and Ben Pulido (Seniors)

Congratulations to Ms.Whalen for being awarded Teacher of the Month.

Erin Whalen, a Special Education teacher for ten years at Senn High School is Senn’s November Teacher of the Month. Whalen is honored with this title due to the passion and love she has for her job and students. Whalen wants kids to know how significant they are to her, “I don’t want students to feel like they are invisible. I want them to know that I see them”.  received_1016979251695726 (1)

When Whalen was a student in high school she felt invisible; like she had no one who supported her. So she floated aimlessly through school. That is why Whalen wants to be the teacher that she never had, “I want to teach the students things that I never learned, but wished someone taught me. I don’t want what happened to me to happen to them.”

Whalen is a reliable teacher, rather it’s a math assignment or even a problem at home, you can always count on her. “I really love being a teacher, especially a teacher at Senn. Since I started here, I’ve had the opportunity to work with many different students and that is one of the best parts of my job. When I’m in the halls, I try to check in with as many students as I can.”

Whalen hopes that her students remember her as a fun loving teacher who will always believe and care for them.

She wishes the best for all students at Senn. When Whalen is not teaching, she thinks of ways to help students get jobs and find career paths. If there is a way to help every student at Senn, Ms. Whalen wouldn’t hesitate to do it.
